Vintage Kilo sale in Manchester

Can't say for certain if you'll find anything decent, but if you want to do some digging, the Vintage Threads Kilo Sale, which takes place this coming weekend in Manchester, could be for you.

Running over 4th and 5th September and taking place at the The Triangle Shopping Centre (Old Adidas Unit next to Tampopo), Exchange Square, Manchester, M4 3TR, it's vintage clothing by weight - grab clothing ranging from the 40s and the 80s, weigh it and you'll be charged £13 per kilo. Might be quantity over quality, but there's always a chance of something interesting sneaking through.

Times vary, with trade allowed in from 9-11 (Saturday) and 10-11 (Sunday), everyone else allowed in from 11am, with the event running until 5pm. If you want to register as trade, get in touch with the organisers.

Mind Yuh Business - October

Still a bit of time before the event, but you might want to make a note in your diary for the upcoming Mind Yuh Business.

The date is Saturday October 16th, with the night being a double header with leading London ska club Set The Tone 67. So expect two floors of the best vintage sounds in an art deco venue - soul, funk, boogaloo, reggae, ska & rocksteady. Dr Bob Jones, Dean Rudland and Tim K (resident) will be residing in the MYB corner whilst Dean Thatcher, Stephen Saunders & Ricky Barrow will be residing in the STT 67 corner.

Al of that at the Dex Club, Brixton Road, London SW9 from 8pm - 4am. Admission is £7 before 11pm, £9 thereafter

eBay watch: 1960s Tiger Beat! magazine

Just noticed this quirky little thing on eBay - a copy of Tiger Beat! magazine from the 1960s.

This July 1966 edition includes a special 'magazine inside a magazine' called 'Mod Mag', 19 pages edited in England and including something called From London With Luv, packing an exclusive column on 'the latest pop happenings' by Chrissie Shrimpton, covering hanging out with the Stones to shopping at Biba. Essentially a look at 'swinging London' for a US audience.

There's also news on the likes of The Yardbirds, The Who, The Kinks and the Small Faces. You'll learn nothing new, but it's likely to be an entertaining and unintentionally amusing read. Current price is £6.50.

Sunspel classic polo shirts

I think we mentioned Sunspel when the James Bond polo shirts first launched a couple of years back. But since then we haven't - which is something of an oversight as they do have some very well-made and stylish polo shirts on the market.

The 1950s-inspired polo shirt that was made for the Casino Royale Bond movie is still available, but the classic polo shirts are worth checking out too.

The one above is made from a 100% two fold Egyptian cotton and has a tailored fit, pique rib collar and cuffs and a double stitched hem. The only possible downside is the side vent. If you can deal with that, it sells for £49.95 in various colours. Oh yes - all are handmade too.

Land Of 1000 Dances - Edinburgh

News of a new soul and R&B night (throwing in a bit of blues and jazz) for Edinburgh - Land Of 1000 Dances.

Confirmed dates are Saturdays 11th September and 9th October at Studio 24, Carlton Road, Edinburgh, with the playlist apparently suited to those 'who like a little Elmore James and Slim Harpo with their Jimmy McGriff and Temptations'.

It runs from 11pm - 3am, with admission free before 11:30pm, £5 or £4 (students/members) after. More details on the club's Facebook page.

Ska 'n' B returns to Cambridge

We ran a feature on the Ska 'n' B club night in Cambridge some months back, so if you want to know all about it, check out the feature here. If that appeals, you might like to know that the next night is rapidly approaching - on Saturday 18th September.

The next night is at Bar BRB in Cambridge, with guest DJs Jamie Parr & Southern Sam, throwing in a free CD om the door.

Ska 'n' B club night feature

The 'target' is the dividing line of mod - some people love it as a symbol of the original 60s mod scene, others hate for being obvious, tacky and overused. So I expect this Target print by Patrick Thomas to get a mixed reception. Especially as it comes with a twist.

It's a 2 ink screen print, sized at 76 x 56cm and printed onto 250gm2 arches 88 paper in a limited run of 100. Signed and numbered by the artist.

That twist? Well, the artist has 'shot' the target, leaving a perforation right in the centre. Those crazy artists. Anyway, it sells for £145, with the option of a silver background instead of the white too.

Adidas Samba trainers in light blue

I know there are a lot of fans of the Adidas Samba out there - if that's you and you like the colour of sky blue, the latest Adidas Samba reissue should be right up your street.

the shoe is fairly typical - a football shoe dating back in 1962, but known more as a piece if casual footwear from the 1970s onwards. However, the latest edition has an all suede upper in what's officially called 'Vision Blue' with three white leather Stripes, a vulcanised white sole and some purple detailing.

The Birds in new Shindig!

Cheers to Smiler for dropping us a line about the new issuee of Shindig!

Two articles might be of interest to you. Firstly, Smiler himself has put together a piece on cult 60s beat band The Birds, a five page article with unseen photos of The Birds and some words from lead singer Ali McKenzie. There's also a piece of revival/powerpop band The Purple Hearts, which might well appeal.

Other stuff too I imagine, but as I've not seen a copy, I'm no wiser than you are! Grab one via the website.

If watching rather than reading is your thing, check out the newly-launched Modculture video section.

Here's the thinking behind it - there are a number of videos across a number of sites (not just YouTube) that are of interest to mods, but most take an age to find. So we have started indexing the best, making them easy to find and watch.

Right now, around 50 videos are online, with more being added constantly. But feel free to recommend anything you find below, the more listed, the better.

Danger: Diabolik screening in London

Independent cinema clubs and events seem to be springing up all over, with Cigarette Burns being one such group. Why are we mentioning them? Because they happen to be screening Danger: Diabolik on Saturday 11th September at the Rio Cinema, 107 Kingsland High Street, London, E8 2PB.

From the producers of Barbarella and directed by the Legendary master Mario Bava, not to mention complete with a soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, it's a typically silly sixties crime flick that's a positive feast for your eyes.

Cellarful of Motown 4 CD

Yes, those Motown cellars keep on giving, enough to produce the Cellarful of Motown Volume 4 CD.

We're talking 50 never before heard tunes from Motown, headed up by 'Why Don't You Come Home', a previously-unheard 1968 track by Stevie Wonder, along with stomper 'Born To Be Bad' by Edwin Starr and 'Three Times Loser' - a 'lost' Marvin Gaye tune from 1963.

Anyway, all 50 tunes listed over the page, with the album released this coming Monday, August 30th for a bargain £8.99. Look out for a review ahead of that hopefully and see Amazon for the full tracklisting.

eBay watch: 1961 Vespa Sportique

A tasty-looking scooter on eBay right now, with this 1961 Vespa Sportique, which is currently at an equally-tasty price.

According to the seller, the scooter was imported from Italy and authentically restored by Scooterworks in London in 2004. Since then it has been maintained by Scooterworks and is being sold with MOT and tax until July 2011. It has also covered less than 4500 miles since the restoration.

Condition, unsurprisingly, is described as 'excellent', it has a 150cc engine and if you pick it up, you'll also get the rear seat, a matching silver open face helmet, some books, a Vespa DVD, the original Italian number plate and all the relevant receipts. Right now it's up for £770.

London Weekend Show '79

Cheers to Spectre off the forums for finding this interesting TV show from 1979 - the London Weekend Show.

Presumably a 'yoof' show from the era, this particular episode focuses on the run-up to the launch of the Quadrophenia movie and the mod scene developing at the time. Certainly some interesting footage and chat from both from 1979 and from the 1960s. You'll also witness the world's greatest combover too.

Mulberry Bush DVD / Blu-ray reviewed

It's not actually out for a couple of weeks, but we have an early review of the BFI/Flipside reissue of Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush.

It's a dual-format release, which gives you the option of DVD and Blu-ray and a choice of extras. But the headline act is obviously the movie, a swinging affair set in the new town of Stevenage, where young Jamie is desperate to join the permissive society, courtesy of all the hipster girls in town.

Soundtracked by Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group, the movie is out on 13th September 2010, but the review is online right now.

New Shindig!-endorsed club, Happening

When Shindig! meets up with London’s retro-rocking Sweet but Deadly and Dirty Water promoters you know you’re in for a memorable night out. They have made a corner of King’s Cross, the Social Club, their own little subcultural haven, inviting the best band’s and DJs to stoke the sonic fires.

Playing on September 4th are Austria's much-loved six-piece THE STAGGERS (http://www.myspace.com/staggers), promoting their second album ‘Zombies Of Love’. Support on the night is from those paisley-decorated dandies from Derby, THE SILVER FACTORY (http://www.myspace.com/24hoursfromheaven). The dancefloor entertainment then comes from Phil Istine, Mr. Moon Jelly (The Lysergics) and Gary The Tall (Wildish Slights) playing some prime '60s garage, beat, psych, soul and rock’n’roll.

Happening takes place @ King’s Cross Social Club, 2 Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JE from 8pm-2am. Each month there is a different entry price. For September 4th it is £6 in advance from HERE, or it is £8 on the door. The event is likely to be oversubscribed so advance tickets are recommended.

This Is England '86 details

News of a TV series you might have seen trailed on TV already, news of a related shirt giveaway from Brutus and an extended trailer of This Is England '86.

First up, the TV series, which screens from 7th September 2010 and is a follow-on from the original movie, with all the characters looking for love, a laugh, a job and a future. According to director Shane Meadows: 'Not only did I want to take the story of the gang broader and deeper, I also saw in the experiences of the young in 1986 many resonances to now recession, lack of jobs, sense of the world at a turning point. Whereas the film told part of the story, the TV serial will tell the rest.'

In the run up to the screening, Brutus Trimfit is also doing a shirt giveaway, offering up one of each of the current three styles, just by answering a simple question: 'To me Brutus means...' Best answer wins. You can find out more details and enter at the Brutus Trimfit Facebook page
